What is synaptic plasticity?
When we learn something new, the connections between neurons in the brain are strengthened.
For example, when we learn a new skill or a new fact, the connections between the neurons involved in that process are strengthened, allowing us to remember and recall the information more easily in the future. This process is called
long-term potentiation (LTP).
On the other hand, when we stop using or no longer need a certain skill or information, the connections between neurons that were previously strengthened may weaken or disappear, a process called long-term depression (LTD). This is
one of the reasons why we forget things over time.
